Gemini in Google Meet review (2026): a built-in AI notetaker that saves notes to Docs, but only on some plans
Gemini in Google Meet reviewed: which Workspace plans include Take notes for me, where notes are saved, who gets them, languages, and what else to consider.
Gemini's "Take notes for me" is the AI notetaker built into Google Meet. Switch it on and, after the call, a Google Doc with a summary, decisions and action items lands in Drive. It is part of Meet and Workspace, so no second vendor needs approval.
I compared Google's help pages, admin documentation, release posts and pricing page to see how far that promise goes. It covers the basics well on paper: capture, a two-tab Doc, sharing controls and two follow-up routines. Outside the Meet lane and the right Workspace plan, it gets thin fast.
Quick verdict: is Gemini Take notes for me in Google Meet good enough?
It is good enough when three things are true: the organizer's plan includes it, the meeting happens in Meet (or in person with Meet open), and everyone speaks one of eight supported languages. When one of those fails, I'd look elsewhere.
- Pick it if your company already pays for Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard or Enterprise Plus and you want notes in Docs with no extra vendor.
- Skip it if you're on Business Starter, run calls on other platforms, or switch languages inside one meeting.
| Category | My verdict |
|---|---|
| Plans and price | Narrow, tied to your edition |
| Capture | Solid for Meet and in person |
| Notes and transcripts | Useful Doc, separate recording |
| Sharing | Flexible, tied to invitees |
| Follow-up | Early, two next steps |
1. Which Google Workspace plans include Gemini Take notes for me?
Google's feature table lists Take notes for me on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus and Frontline Plus. The Google AI Pro for Education add-on includes it, and so do the personal Google AI Pro and Ultra plans.
| Plan | Take notes for me |
|---|---|
| Business Starter | Not included |
| Business Standard | Included |
| Business Plus | Included |
| Enterprise Standard | Included |
| Enterprise Plus | Included |
| Frontline Plus | Included |
Pricing: Google's pricing page lists Business Starter at $7, Business Standard at $14 and Business Plus at $22 per user per month. Enterprise is quote based. The same page marks "Gemini in Meet" as not supported on Starter.
The organizer's plan is what counts. Google says the meeting organizer must have an edition that includes the feature, so who sends the invite matters. Google also stopped selling the separate Gemini add-ons for business editions and moved the features into the editions, so for a work account the edition is the way in.
Admins control the default too. For Business Standard and Business Plus organizations, automatic notes for meetings with three or more people are on by default. For Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus and the education add-on, that setting is off by default.
Verdict: Narrow. A good fit for Standard-and-up shops and out of reach at Starter.
2. Can Gemini take notes outside Google Meet, and in which languages?
Google documents two ways to use it.
- In a Meet call. Turn it on from the Calendar event's video call options, the Meet green room, or inside the call. Everyone sees a notice and a pencil icon while it runs, and late joiners can open "Summary so far" to catch up.
- In person. Tap "Take notes" on the Meet home screen on web or mobile, set the device nearby, and Gemini documents the conversation. You can pause or stop it. Meet hardware touch controllers can also start, stop and pause notes in eligible meetings.
Those are the two uses Google documents. For calls on other platforms, I'd confirm with Google before counting on it.
Languages. Eight: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It works in one language at a time, and mixed-language meetings aren't supported. If someone speaks a different language for at least 30 seconds, Meet offers to change the notes language. One passage on Google's help page says English is open to all users and the other seven are for Beta users, so confirm Beta access before promising Spanish notes to a team.
Who can start it, and when it works.
- With Host Management on, only hosts and co-hosts can turn notes on or off. Otherwise the organizer and participants inside the host's organization can start or stop notes.
- Google recommends meetings from 15 minutes to 8 hours. A meeting with fewer than 50 spoken words won't produce notes.
- Notes aren't retroactive. Start late and the earlier part isn't covered.
- Admins can require participants to consent before it runs. That setting is off by default.
Verdict: Solid for Meet calls and in-person sessions, held back by the one-language rule.
3. Does Gemini record the meeting or only take notes?
The notes are a Google Doc with two tabs. Quick notes is the default: one page of takeaways and action items that Google built for executives and anyone less involved in the details. Full notes holds the summary, decisions, action items and details. Organizers can pick Standard or Longer notes. Gemini can add screenshots of presented slides when a presentation stays on screen for at least 10 seconds, and admins can control that.
Recording is a separate Meet feature. It has its own switch and its own edition list, which includes Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials, and Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus. A recording captures the active speaker and anything presented, and it saves to the organizer's Drive.
Transcripts are a third feature. Each time you start one, Meet creates a separate transcript file in the organizer's Drive. It holds spoken words only, not chat. Transcripts cover more editions than notes do, including Enterprise Starter and Workspace Individual. In-person sessions work differently: Google says the Doc from an in-person session includes the notes, action items and the complete transcript.
That makes three things to switch on and manage: notes, recording and transcript.
Verdict: A useful Doc, with recording and transcripts handled as separate features.
4. Where does Gemini save Google Meet notes, and who gets them?
Where. Shortly after the meeting ends, the Doc appears in the organizer's Google Drive, in the "Google Meet" folder, inside a sub-folder for that meeting. Meet attaches it to the Calendar event and emails a link to the organizer and to whoever started note-taking. Notes follow whatever Meet retention policy your organization has set.
Who. Hosts and co-hosts pick "Send notes to" from three options:
- All invited guests, including people outside your organization
- Invited guests in your organization
- Hosts and co-hosts only
Only hosts and co-hosts see that menu. Admins set the default (Google's default is invited guests in your organization) and can stop hosts from changing it. Those admin defaults apply to scheduled meetings. For instant meetings, the notes go to the hosts and whoever started note-taking.
Three catches:
- "Invited" means everyone on the Calendar invite, not the people who attended.
- Anyone invited through a group email has to request individual access to the Doc.
- External guests can see that the Calendar event has a notes attachment, but seeing it doesn't give them access. The sharing setting decides that.
In-person notes go to your email and to the Drive folder of whoever turned the feature on.
Verdict: Flexible controls, but they follow the invite list rather than who was in the room.
5. What can Gemini do after the meeting?
Google has added "next steps" to the post-meeting screen. Under "Routines for this meeting," you can turn on two routines: draft a follow-up email in Gmail, and add action items to Google Tasks. Take notes for me has to be on during the meeting, and admins can switch the routines off. Google says more steps are on the way. The notes email also carries a link to the Doc, a summary and suggested next steps.
Both routines stay inside Google's own apps, which suits a Google-first team.
Verdict: Early. Two routines, with room to grow.
Pros and cons of Gemini in Google Meet
Pros
- Built into Meet and Workspace, so there is no second vendor to approve
- Quick notes gives a one-page summary, and Full notes keeps the detail
- "Summary so far" helps people who join late
- Three sharing options, admin defaults and an optional consent step
- Notes land in Drive and on the Calendar event, and follow your retention policy
- An in-person mode runs from the same Meet app
Cons
- Business Starter doesn't include it, and the organizer's plan decides whether notes work
- Eight languages, one at a time, with a Beta qualifier on the non-English ones
- Sharing follows invitees, not attendees, and group-email members must request access
- Meetings under 50 spoken words produce no notes, and notes started late don't cover the start
- Recording and transcripts are separate features with their own settings
- Only two next steps for now
How I'd improve Gemini in Google Meet
- Share notes with the people who attended, not only the people invited.
- Let members of a group-email invite open the Doc without sending an access request.
- Make the language story simple: open all eight languages to everyone, or label clearly which ones are Beta.
- Support more than one spoken language in a single meeting.
- Add more next steps beyond the Gmail draft and Google Tasks, since Google says they are coming.
Also consider: alternatives to Gemini Take notes for me
Circleback. I'd look at Circleback when your calls aren't all on Meet or you want notes pushed into other apps. Its bot joins Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Webex, and calendar auto-join lets you choose internal and external meetings. The desktop app on macOS and Windows records with no bot and no visible participant in the call, and it saves audio and video by default. Mobile records in person, audio only. It turns conversations into speaker-labeled transcripts, notes and assigned action items, and Ask Circleback searches your meetings and connected email with cited answers. Automations have 12 native step types, including Slack, Notion, Linear, HubSpot, Salesforce, Attio, Zoho, monday.com, Zapier and webhooks. It transcribes in 100+ languages. The limits: no Linux app, no browser extension, and desktop and mobile speaker names can stay "Participant N". The Circleback site and its pricing page have the details.
Meet's own recording and transcripts. If you want a verbatim record more than AI notes, Meet's built-in transcripts and recording cover that on more plans than Take notes for me does. Transcripts include Enterprise Starter and Workspace Individual alongside Business Standard and Plus, and recording includes Essentials and Enterprise Starter. Google's Take notes for me help page lists the notes settings.
Parting words
Take notes for me is a sensible default for teams on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard or Enterprise Plus that run their meetings in Meet. I'd pick it for them: the Doc is organized, it lands in Drive and Calendar, and sharing is controllable. The plan lock, the eight languages and sharing that follows the invite list decide whether it is enough. If one of those is a problem for your team, shop for a notetaker that covers more platforms and languages before rolling Gemini out.
FAQ
Does Gemini in Google Meet take notes automatically?
It can. In Meet settings under Meeting records, an organizer can choose automatic notes for all scheduled meetings they host, only meetings with three or more guests, or off. Admins set the organization default: on for meetings with three or more people by default on Business Standard and Business Plus, and off by default on Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus and the education add-on.
Is Gemini note-taking in Google Meet free?
Not on its own. Google says the feature requires an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan. For a work account that means an edition such as Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard or Enterprise Plus, and Business Standard is listed at $14 per user per month. Business Starter doesn't include it.
Where do Gemini Google Meet notes get saved?
In the organizer's Google Drive, in the "Google Meet" folder, inside a sub-folder for that meeting. The Doc is also attached to the Calendar event, and a link is emailed to the organizer and the person who started note-taking.
Can Gemini take notes in Zoom or Microsoft Teams meetings?
Google documents Take notes for me for two uses: Google Meet calls, and in-person sessions started from Meet on web or mobile. I'd confirm with Google before relying on it for Zoom or Teams calls.
What languages does Gemini Take notes for me support?
Eight: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, one language at a time. One passage on Google's help page says English is open to all users and the other seven are for Beta users.
Who can turn Gemini notes on or off in a Google Meet?
The organizer and participants inside the host's organization can start or stop notes. When Host Management is on, only hosts and co-hosts can. Admins can switch the feature off for the organization and can require participants to give consent.
